Application Process

Applications for WAVLI membership are submitted online. Once an application is received, it will be reviewed within 5 to 10 days to ensure the applicant meets the criteria for membership. Before applying, please review the criteria and documentation required for your membership type:

Resident of British Columbia:

Deaf Interpreter
LSQ-French Interpreter
Registered ASL-English Interpreter
Student Member

Non-resident of British Columbia:

Associate Member

Payment for membership is required before your online application can be reviewed. If you have any questions about whether you meet the criteria for membership, please email membership@wavli.com before submitting an application. Applications for membership that are denied will have the membership due refunded, minus a $5 administration fee.

Non-member email subscriptions are also available to keep up-to-date with what's happening with WAVLI and the field of interpreting.





Membership Application Criteria and Required Documentation

Deaf Interpreter

The Deaf Interpreter membership criteria is currently under review and revision. The review of applications for Deaf Interpreter membership has been paused until updated criteria are available.

LSQ-French Interpreter

Criteria:

1) The applicant is currently involved in the provision of LSQ-French interpretation.

2) Maintain a residence in British Columbia.

Documentation Required:

1) Upload a resume of your recent work experience.


Registered ASL-English Interpreter

Criteria:

1) The applicant has graduated from one of the following Interpreter Education Programs with the recognized credential, or a program determined to be equivalent to the following programs:

  • Diploma in Sign Language Interpretation from Vancouver Community College, Vancouver, BC
  • Diploma in Sign Language Interpretation from Lakeland College, Edmonton, AB
  • Diploma in Sign Language Interpretation from Red River College/University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB
  • Diploma in ASL-English Interpretation or Bachelor in Interpretation (ASL-English from George Brown College, Toronto, ON
  • Diploma in ASL-English Interpretation from Nova Scotia Community College, Dartmouth, NS

2) The applicant must provide documentation of recent work experience in the field of ASL-English Interpretation.

3) Maintain a residence in British Columbia.

Documentation Required:

1) Upload the credential from your Interpreter Education Program.

2) Upload a resume of your recent work experience.


Student Member

Criteria:

1) The applicant is currently enrolled in one of Interpreter Education Programs listed below or is obtaining training to meet the requirements to become a Deaf Interpreter member:

  • Diploma in Sign Language Interpretation from Douglas College, Coquitlam, BC
  • Diploma in Sign Language Interpretation from Lakeland College, Edmonton, AB
  • Diploma in Sign Language Interpretation from Red River College/University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB
  • Diploma in ASL-English Interpretation or Bachelor in Interpretation (ASL-English from George Brown College, Toronto, ON
  • Diploma in ASL-English Interpretation from Nova Scotia Community College, Dartmouth, NS

2) Maintain a residence in British Columbia.

Documentation Required:

1) Upload proof of enrolment at an Interpreter Education Program or proof of ongoing training activities to meet the Deaf Interpreter membership criteria.

Associate Member

Criteria:

1) Meet the criteria of one of the above membership categories without the requirement to maintain a residence in British Columbia.

Documentation Required:

1) Upload the documentation listed in the applicable membership category above.
